Tarpon
Juvenile tarpon are abundant right now, with some larger fish making appearances. The best times to catch them are during tide changes, particularly near sunset when the shallows warm up and the backcountry bite truly comes to life. This is the perfect opportunity for anglers looking to reel in these acrobatic fighters!
Bonefish
This year has been exceptional for bonefish! We are consistently catching them on the flats, even in cooler temperatures that have exceeded expectations. If you’re eager to experience the thrill of bonefishing, now is the time!
Cuda
Large barracudas are prevalent on the flats, offering an exciting challenge for both fly and light spinning gear enthusiasts. They are particularly attracted to live mullet and respond well to fast-moving flies. Get ready for some exhilarating action!
Permit
Permit are showing up consistently at their favorite winter hangouts, like shallow coral heads along the gulf edge. However, these fish can be quite elusive due to their incredible eyesight. My secret strategy is to lighten the line; while many anglers use 25 to 30-pound test fluorocarbon, I drop down to as low as 12. This subtle approach often leads to successful bites!
Snook
Targeting snook is particularly easy right now. They are basking in the sun on the south-facing side of mangroves, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Look for the edges of currents where they can ambush prey with minimal effort. The numbers have been phenomenal since last week’s cold front, as many Florida snook have migrated south and are now delightfully spread throughout the lower Florida Keys.
Goliath Grouper
These impressive creatures are hanging out in the same areas as the snook, enjoying easy meals. My technique involves pegging a 1-2 oz lead to a mullet and tossing it into deep holes back in the mangroves. Be prepared with at least 100 lb line, as these giants put up a fierce fight!
Snapper
Cooler water temperatures have made snapper fishing fantastic! I’ve been hammering them in deep channels by dropping chum balls mixed with sand and oats around large chunks of bonita on a hook. It can get messy, but the reward is a bountiful catch!
